Welcome to the Teton County Tobacco Prevention Program

In a landmark vote, the Teton County Board of Health voted UNANIMOUSLY on March 24, 2009 to adopt the Teton District Smoke-free Air Rule!

Essentially, the Teton District Smoke-free Air Rule will protect the public from secondhand smoke (a Class A Carcinogen) exposure in all enclosed public places: including all workplaces, bars and restaurants.

Outdoors, the Clean Indoor Air Act will prohibit smoking from sports arenas (except designated smoking areas away from the general public), chair lift lines, outdoor restaurant patios and decks, public transportation terminals, outdoor service lines and more. There will also be a required 20 ft. buffer zone prohibiting smoking around all doors, windows, ventilation systems and outdoor seating areas.

The regulation will span the entire county, not just individual municipalities therein, and will make Teton County the FIRST SMOKE-FREE COUNTY in Wyoming. The rule will be implemented on May 23, 2009.

This accomplishment was the result of a determined effort, over two and a half years, of many community members – thanks and congratulations are due to all of them!

Program Goals:

Teton County's Ski Resorts set new national standard for smokefree air!

As of June 1, 2008, Grand Targhee Resort, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Snow King Resort will all be establishing smokefree policies resort-wide. These new policies will prohibit cigarette smoking in all indoor and outdoor areas with the exception of a few designated smoking areas which will be located outdoors, appropriately away from open doors and windows.

The Resorts' commitment to health marks a "first" nationally on a number of fronts. No other large US Ski Resorts have passed such comprehensive smokefree policies voluntarily. Furthermore, no other Resorts have passed smokefree policies in collaboration with one another in order to send a strong wellness message to the local, statewide and national community.
